Niyama Per Aquum, a 40-minute seaplane ride from Malé International Airport in the Maldives, works its tropical-island luxury above and below the waterline. Its first resort, Chill, features superb over-water pavilions and a 24-hour spa, plus the truly otherworldly underwater restaurant Subsix (pictured) – six metres down and 500 metres out in the Indian Ocean. Chill is popular with moneyed honeymooners seeking sanctuary and it now has a sister resort, Play, on a neighbouring island. Play combines beachfront cabins with great facilities, including a kids’ club offering a swanky games room and a playground installed with a mist system to keep mini-mortals cool. There’s also a tree-house restaurant where you can feast on Asian-inspired cuisine amid the banyan trees.
